What is Flyball?

Flyball is an exciting, fast-paced relay race for dogs. It involves teams of four dogs racing over hurdles, triggering a spring-loaded box to release a tennis ball, and retuning with the ball to their handler. The fist team to have all four dogs complete the course without errors wins!

This sport known for its speed, teamwork and enthusiastic dogs. But how did flyball start? Lets take a look at its history.

The Origins of Flyball

Flyball was created in the late 1960s by Herbert Wagner, a dog trainer from California. He designed the first flyball box – a device that would release a tennis ball when stepped on – as that dogs could retrieve the ball without human assistance. Wagner introduced his idea on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Cardona where it caught the attention of dog trainers and enthusiasts.

The Sport Takes Off

By the 1980s, flyball had gained popularity, and the first official flyball tournament took place. The North American Flyball Association (NAFA) was established in 1984 to regulate the sport, set rules and organize competitions. Since then, flyball has continued to grow worldwide.

Today NAFA clubs host over 330 tournaments annually with 3000 plus dogs participating.

Flyball Today

Today, flyball is played across North America, Europe, Australia and beyond. It welcomes all breeds, sizes and skill levels. Some of the fastest teams complete a race in under 15 seconds.

Flyball isn’t just about speed – its also about teamwork, training, and the bond between dogs and handlers. It’s a great way for dogs to burn energy, build confidence and have fun.
