Shazam – Border Collie, CRN 041235
Shazam made her flyball debut on a cold fall morning in Carson City. She stunned her teammates on Flying Colors, with whom she ran her whole life, by running under 4 seconds her first time out — outdoors and on grass. With others now passed or retired, she was on our fastest teams, both multibreed and regular. But more than speed was her gentle heart, her willingness to run with any dog, in any position–so long as it wasn’t a rerun–and the joy she brought to her owners and team. She earned her Onyx, her multibreed champion-silver, and her Iron Dog, before succumbing to cancer on September 1, 2014. The flyball community saw Shazzy running at tournaments but those of us on Flying Colors also know how much she gave to the team as a whole in training and practice — so steady (she never crossed), so tiny and quick (she never scared a green dog, even on a close pass), and her speed (she taught the green dogs it is a RACE, not a lope). Shazam–an MVP in every sense of the word. Godspeed, Shazam.
